StoneReefs combines marine biology, computational design, and additive manufacturing to restore biodiversity in urban coastal environments.
Founded in Brande, Denmark
We design, manufacture, and install 3D-printed artificial reef modules made from bioactive composite material. Our modules actively recruit microalgae and marine invertebrates, creating thriving ecosystems on previously barren harbour infrastructure.
Each reef module is computationally designed to maximise surface area and create diverse micro-habitats. The bioactive composite material accelerates colonisation by marine organisms, with measurable biodiversity improvements within months of installation.
With installations across Denmark in collaboration with municipalities, harbour authorities, WWF, and research institutions like DTU, our reef modules have been proven to attract 15–20 invertebrate species within 6–12 months.
